Darfur, meaning Land of the Fur, was an independent sultanate in western Sudan until 1916. For centuries it maintained diplomatic and trade relations with neighbouring states and the wider Islamic world. Its political system blended Islamic scholarship with local governance, creating a stable structure that endured despite periods of conflict.

The region was annexed by the Anglo Egyptian administration during World War One, bringing Darfur under Sudanese colonial rule.  After Sudanese independence in 1956, Darfur experienced chronic underdevelopment, environmental pressures, and political marginalisation. Tensions between pastoralists and farmers increased due to desertification and competition over land. These local disputes intersected with national politics, contributing to rising unrest.  In the early 2000s armed groups from Darfur launched a rebellion seeking autonomy, equitable development, and protection from militia attacks. The government’s response sparked a humanitarian crisis that drew global attention. While the conflict has evolved, the underlying calls for self determination remain influential.

Today Darfur is divided administratively, but many Fur, Zaghawa, and Masalit communities continue to view autonomy as essential to securing peace, justice, and cultural survival.
