The Republic of South Ossetia, located in the central Caucasus, represents the national aspirations of the Ossetian people south of the Greater Caucasus ridge. Ossetians trace cultural heritage to the medieval Alans, an Iranian speaking group with a strong identity grounded in mountain social traditions and the Ossetian language.

The roots of the modern conflict date to 1920 when South Ossetians launched an uprising against Georgian authority during the chaotic collapse of the Russian Empire. The region was later made an autonomous oblast within Soviet Georgia.  When Georgia pursued independence from the Soviet Union in the late 1980s and removed South Ossetian autonomy, local leaders declared their own sovereignty. Fighting erupted in 1991. A ceasefire in 1992 left Russian peacekeepers monitoring a contested boundary and South Ossetia operating outside Georgian control. The region held referendums that consistently supported independence and closer ties with North Ossetia in Russia.  After the Russian Georgian War of 2008, Moscow formally recognized South Ossetia as a sovereign state. It remains heavily dependent on Russia for security, investment, and international communication.

Although some leaders support full independence, others advocate unification with Russia. The international community continues to view South Ossetia as part of Georgia. Like Abkhazia, it participates in the Community for Democracy and Rights of Nations and is an example of how territorial disputes from the Soviet period continue to shape regional politics.
