Bavaria’s independence movement draws on deep historical continuity. Once a powerful medieval duchy and later a kingdom (1806–1918), Bavaria retained a strong regional identity even after joining the German Empire in 1871.

After World War II, the reconstituted Free State of Bavaria adopted a constitution in 1946, and the Bavaria Party (Bayernpartei) emerged to advocate either for extensive autonomy or full statehood within a European context.  Although Bavaria is fully integrated into the Federal Republic, its distinct Catholic heritage, dialects, and regional institutions have helped preserve a robust sense of Bavarian nationhood. Economic power reinforces that identity: Bavaria is one of Germany’s wealthiest regions, home to global industries such as automotive and advanced manufacturing, and often resents what it views as an unequal fiscal transfer system to poorer states.  In recent decades, Bavarian nationalism has been peaceful and democratic, operating primarily within electoral politics and cultural organisations.

While the Bavaria Party’s support remains modest, it continues to advocate sovereignty and participates in the European Free Alliance, linking Bavaria to other autonomy-seeking nations in Europe. Polls regularly show pockets of public sympathy for independence, though most Bavarians remain comfortable with strong regional autonomy within Germany. Still, political leaders frequently emphasise Bavaria’s special status and its ability to “go its own way,” keeping the concept of a sovereign Bavaria alive within public imagination.
