The Federal Republic of Padania is a proposed state in northern Italy associated with a political and cultural movement that emerged in the late twentieth century. The name Padania draws inspiration from the Po River basin and the concept of a shared macro region with linguistic, cultural, and economic commonalities.

Though not an ethnic nation in the traditional sense, supporters of Padania argue that northern Italy developed distinct civic traditions during the Middle Ages through the wealth and autonomy of the Lombard and Venetian city states. These regions cultivated urban self government, commercial networks, and a strong sense of regional pride that persisted into the modern era.  The modern Padania movement gained prominence in the early 1990s when regionalist groups coalesced around demands for fiscal federalism and recognition of northern Italy as a distinct nation. In 1996 a symbolic declaration of independence was proclaimed alongside the creation of a provisional government structure. Although not widely accepted as a formal nationhood project, the episode reflected deep frustration with tax redistribution and perceived economic imbalances between the industrial north and the poorer south of Italy.  Over time the movement shifted away from separatism and toward regional devolution at the national level.

The idea of Padania remains culturally significant because it frames the identity of several prosperous regions including Lombardy, Veneto, Piedmont, and Emilia Romagna as sharing a common historical trajectory. While independence sentiment has diminished, debates over autonomy, taxation, and decentralisation continue to animate northern Italian politics. The Padania concept endures as a symbolic expression of regional frustration and as a lens through which northern Italians interrogate their place within the Italian state.
