The independence aspirations of the Greenlandic Inuit, whose homeland is the vast Arctic island known as Kalaallit Nunaat. Greenland has been inhabited for thousands of years by successive Inuit cultures who developed sophisticated ways of life adapted to ice, sea, and seasonal migration.

Danish colonisation began in the eighteenth century and gradually transformed the island into a remote part of the Danish realm. Mission stations, trading posts, and administrative centres created new social structures, but Inuit traditions and language remained overwhelmingly dominant in daily life.  Modern Greenlandic nationalism emerged in the twentieth century when economic reforms and centralisation efforts from Copenhagen disrupted traditional livelihoods. Rising literacy in Greenlandic and the growth of a local political class encouraged claims for greater self determination. This led to the creation of Home Rule in 1979, marking the first major step toward autonomy. Later reforms expanded into Self Government in 2009, giving Greenland control over most internal affairs, including natural resources and the right to declare full independence if the population chooses.

Today, the independence debate revolves around economic sustainability, resource management, and cultural rights. Greenland’s strategic importance has increased due to climate change, new shipping routes, and international interest in minerals. Many Greenlanders support eventual sovereignty but recognise that long term economic diversification is needed before independence is viable. The idea of a Republic of Greenland expresses a vision of political self reliance that aligns with centuries of Inuit cultural continuity and the modern movement toward reclaiming control over land, language, and destiny.
