The Republic of Scotland refers to the modern independence aspirations of the Scottish nation, a community with a long history of statehood prior to the 1707 Union with England. Scotland emerged as a kingdom in the medieval period, developing its own legal system, educational institutions, and national church.

The Declaration of Arbroath in 1320 articulated a powerful early expression of Scottish sovereignty, affirming that political authority derived from the will of the people. These traditions remained central to national consciousness even after Scotland entered into political union with England while retaining important separate institutions.  Industrialisation in the nineteenth century fostered prosperity and civic pride, yet it also prompted growing debates about Scotland’s role within the British state. Cultural movements revived Scottish literature, music, and identity, laying the groundwork for political self awareness. By the twentieth century calls for self government gained momentum, resulting in the establishment of the Scottish Parliament in 1999. Devolution restored domestic authority over key policy areas and deepened a sense of distinct national political culture.

The independence question reached global attention during the 2014 referendum. Although a majority voted to remain in the United Kingdom, the campaign energised national debate. Subsequent political developments, including the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union, renewed interest in sovereignty among parts of the Scottish public. Some envision a future Republic of Scotland in which national institutions would operate independently within European and international frameworks. While the movement remains politically contested, Scotland’s long historical continuity as a nation ensures that discussions about statehood will continue to shape its identity and future.
