The Venetian Republic as a modern independence aspiration draws inspiration from the millennium long state that existed from the ninth century until its fall to Napoleon in 1797. Venice developed a unique political and commercial culture marked by maritime trade, elected institutions, and a cosmopolitan outlook shaped by centuries of contact with the eastern Mediterranean.

Venetian identity became deeply linked to the lagoon environment, the Venetian language, and a tradition of civic autonomy. Even after annexation to Austria and later incorporation into the Kingdom of Italy, the idea of Venice as a distinct political community remained embedded in local consciousness.  Modern Venetian nationalism emerged in the nineteenth century when attempts were made to revive the Venetian Republic during the uprisings of 1848. Though short lived, the effort left a symbolic imprint that twentieth century activists later reclaimed. After World War Two regional pride strengthened, driven by economic transformation in the Veneto region and the persistence of the Venetian language in cultural life. By the 1980s and 1990s, several groups began articulating the concept of a sovereign Venetian Republic, framing it as a restoration of an historic polity rather than a secession from Italy.

Contemporary movements argue that Veneto possesses a distinct identity shaped by its history, language, and economic strength. Advocacy centres on fiscal autonomy, cultural recognition, and preservation of the region’s heritage. Periodic unofficial referendums have shown pockets of support for independence or greater self rule. Although these initiatives lack legal standing, they reflect ongoing sentiment that the legacy of the old Venetian Republic continues to influence regional identity. While independence remains a minority view, the symbolism of a restored Republic endures as a reminder of Venice’s historic role as one of Europe’s most enduring and sophisticated maritime states.
