East Turkistan is the name used by Uyghur and other Turkic peoples for their historic homeland in what is now the Xinjiang region of China. The region has a deep history linked to the Silk Road, Islamic scholarship, and Turkic migration.

Uyghur identity developed from a mixture of ancient steppe cultures and oasis based kingdoms, producing a distinctive linguistic, religious, and cultural heritage. Throughout the Qing and early Republican periods, local leaders periodically pressed for autonomy as Chinese state authority fluctuated.  In the twentieth century two short lived states emerged: the First East Turkistan Republic in 1933 and the Second in 1944. Both governments sought to preserve Turkic Islamic traditions and resist outside control. After 1949, the region was incorporated into the People’s Republic of China as the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. Autonomy was limited in practice, and the state applied extensive security, demographic, and cultural policies to integrate the region.  Since the 1990s increasing restrictions on religion, language, and mobility have intensified Uyghur discontent. Diaspora groups advocate independence or self determination under the name East Turkistan, emphasising historical statehood, cultural survival, and international human rights concerns. Several organisations operate in exile and maintain the use of the name East Turkistan to assert national identity distinct from the Chinese state.

Today the concept of East Turkistan represents a symbolic assertion of sovereignty and cultural continuity. It embodies the historical memory of past independence attempts and the contemporary struggle for recognition, protection of heritage, and freedom of expression.
