The Republic of Zanzibar and Pemba refers to the aspiration to restore the sovereignty of the islands that formed an independent sultanate before union with Tanganyika.

For centuries Zanzibar thrived as a cosmopolitan trading hub, connecting Africa, Arabia, India, and beyond. Its culture reflects Swahili, Arab, Persian, and African influences, producing a distinct island identity.  In 1963 Zanzibar gained independence from Britain as a constitutional monarchy. A revolution in 1964 overthrew the sultanate and established a short lived republic, which soon united with Tanganyika to form Tanzania. Over time some Zanzibaris grew concerned that the union diluted island autonomy and did not reflect the aspirations of the population.

While Zanzibar maintains its own president and legislature within Tanzania’s union structure, advocates for full independence argue that the islands never fully consented to permanent union or that the terms of union were not adequately implemented.  The idea of a Republic of Zanzibar and Pemba remains a symbolic expression of island identity, historic sovereignty, and a desire for greater control over political and economic affairs.
