The Republic of Chuuk refers to a proposed state envisioned by independence supporters in Chuuk State, one of the four states of the Federated States of Micronesia. Chuuk is a culturally diverse group of islands located in the central Pacific with a proud seafaring heritage and a complex system of clan based social organisation.

Historically the islands moved through Spanish, German, and Japanese control before becoming part of the United Nations Trust Territory administered by the United States. These transitions brought dramatic economic and cultural changes yet Chuukese identity remained anchored in local languages and traditions.  When the Federated States of Micronesia achieved independence in 1986 under a Compact of Free Association with the United States, internal political differences soon emerged. Chuukese leaders began expressing concerns about economic allocation, governance structures, and the perceived imbalance of power within the federation.

By 2012 discussions around a Chuuk independence referendum had begun. These debates focused on whether Chuuk could achieve greater development and autonomy outside of the federal system.  Referendums were scheduled and later postponed several times due to administrative, political, and logistical issues. Supporters of independence argue that a Republic of Chuuk could negotiate its own Compact or international arrangements similar to other Pacific island states. Critics point to economic dependence and the need for regional stability. Despite these challenges, Chuukese nationalism remains an active force shaped by island identity, local governance traditions, and aspirations for a greater voice in determining political destiny.

The idea of a Chuuk Republic continues to circulate within public debate as part of a broader conversation about federalism and self governance in Micronesia.
